The 30th edition of the EBU Radio Assembly took place in Geneva on 24-25 April 2024. In the wake of the Media Summit, the event focused on the theme “Creating Memorable Stories”.
Radio is powerful: it brings stories that matter into our lives, creates rituals around various moments throughout the day, and provides trusted guidance to make sense of the changing world. Listeners build meaningful and lasting relationships with the stations, shows and voices that radio offers. Storytelling is at the heart of the radio experience and can be a powerful force for change. To create the change we want to see in the world, we may need to create new stories with new heroes. And it matters greatly who is holding the pen or the microphone. We’ve seen the emergence of a creator economy in an audio ecosystem where genres and formats are evolving more quickly than ever. Technology and generative AI play a key role, opening up possibilities that were not previously part of our experience.
Where does this all lead us? Does public service radio have the ambition to continue creating stories that bring families and communities together and will turn into collective memories for new generations? Or is the on-demand world in constant need of faster production and shorter formats that do not aspire to live longer and go deeper? Where should we most wisely invest in the creation of new stories that are ambitious and speak to all, across generations and communities?
