Dear colleagues,

Recommendation engines have greatly changed the way we consume content. Our habits are changing, yet most of us are unaware of the presence or effects of those algorithms, in particular the existence of filter bubbles. Even worse, studies show that we tend to adapt our behaviors to conform to algorithms’ expectations.

We, as Public Service Medias, have a responsibility to use technology for the benefits of our users, without compromising on our values and ethics. This is why the EBU Big Data Initiative (BDI) workshop taking place on 12 and 13 December in Brussels, placed under the patronage of RTBF CEO and EBU President Jean-Paul Philippot, will specifically address how PSM should shape algorithms which reflect PSM values.

On Day 1, international experts from different fields will enlighten us on a range of issues pertaining to
recommendations and user behavior. On Day 2, professional facilitators will help us come up with innovative ideas on how to combine the power of algorithms on the one hand, and our amazing editorial knowledge on the other hand.

We will be sending out invitations for the workshop this month, and we have also blocked booked hotel accommodation to facilitate your stay.

I sincerely hope to see you in Brussels in December.
All the best,
Pierre-Nicolas Schwab, RTBF Big Data / CRM Manager
