Solutions Journalism

SPECIAL NOTE: This event is cancelled. If you have already registered you will receive more information in due course.

This Master Class is co-created with the BBC.

Solutions-focused news is about dealing with difficult topics in an engaging way.

When a video about recycling gets tens of millions of views on Facebook alone, it suggests that our audiences are finding this kind of storytelling engaging. The video in question was by Dougal Shaw from the BBC, one of a growing number of journalists embracing solutions-focused news. This approach brings context, perspective, background and understanding which helps nurture debate.

News is not only about reflecting the horrors of war and conflict, but also moving stories forwards. Solution-oriented stories show what progress is being made, or can be made, on a particular issue.

Editorial priorities for each day’s news include selecting the stories that can provide a more accurate and fairer portrayal of the world we live in. Producing solutions-focused news stories requires a specific set of skills and behaviour that will positively impact the audience.

Discover how you can join the transformation of the information landscape.
