Loudness Workshop: 2 loud days at EBU headquarters
22 février 2011
Over 120 broadcast staff, equipment manufacturers and audio mixers signed up for the EBU Loudness Workshop organised at EBU headquarters on 23 February.
Well-known Tonmeisters Askan Siegfried (NDR - who is also a member of the team who will be mixing this year's Eurovision Song contest) and Florian Camerer (ORF - well-known for the New Year's Day concert broadcast from the Musikverein concert hall in Vienna each year) treated the audience to a very practical approach on using loudness metering and normalisation in broadcast facilities.
The workshop was organized following the overwhelming success of the EBU TECHNICAL Group PLOUD, which has been working for over two years now to address the biggest audience complaint in broadcasting: excessive audio-level differences. The 'hands-on' nature of the event was not limited to demonstrations: 17 manufacturers demonstrated their latest EBU Mode Loudness implementations and mixing sessions were held throughout the afternoon to enable audio engineers to gain hands-on experience in 'mixing for consistent loudness'.
In preparation for the workshop approximately 50 manufacturers and broadcasters gathered at the EBU on 22 February to discuss the latest meter implementations in detail as well as new test signals and other technical topics.
