Libya's landmark elections last weekend were witnessed live across the country and around the world thanks in part to the EBU and the BBC's media development arm, BBC Media Action.
"We will never forget your support to us in our time of need," Culture Minister Aburrahman Habil wrote to team coordinator and EBU consultant Olaf Steenfadt after what a very challenging operation mounted after an invitation from the Transitional Government of Libya.
Apart from Steenfadt, a former journalist at Germany's ZDF, the team included:
- Hans Laroes, EBU consultant and former editor-in-chief of NOS (Netherlands)
- Tarik Kafala, Editor of the Middle East Section at BBC News and Project Manager Libya at BBC Media Action
- Fayed Abushammalah, former BBC Correspondent, producer and journalist
- Khaeri Aboushagor, journalist and human rights campaigner
- Abdelaziz Touati: Head of News Gathering and Deputy Technical Director at Tunisian TV
Before and during the elections on 7 July, the EBU and BBC Media Action provided editorial and technical support to Al-Wataniya, successor to the former EBU Member Libya Jamahiriya Broadcasting. It was even possible to arrange live feeds from remote desert towns in the far south of Libya which were carried on the Eurovision News Exchange.
