Ms Cilla Benkö will take over as Director General of Swedish Radio (SR) on October 1 from Mr Mats Svegfors, who has been at the organisation's helm since 2009. 

Ms Benkö was appointed Deputy Director General of SR in 2008 and has been a member of the EBU Executive Board since 2010.  

She began work in the station's Sports Department more than 20 years ago before moving to the news department. Between 1989 and 1992 she worked as a freelance journalist in New York.

Since 1996 she has had held various management positions including Editor-in-Chief of the News and Current Affairs department. She was appointed Deputy Director, Programme Production in May 2007.

Mr SVegfors's retirement from SR takes effect in August 2013.
