Eurovision Film Week: a focus on European film

The European Broadcasting Union has presented details of Eurovision Film Week, which celebrates the contribution of European film makers to the world – and the industry's enduring connection to public service media (PSM).

The event will take place during the first week of December on the eve of the European Film Awards ceremony in Berlin. Audiences will enjoy the best of European films handpicked by PSM.

EBU Media Director Annika Nyberg Frankenhaeuser presented details of the project to journalists at an event, which took place ahead of the second semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmo, Sweden (16/5). She said PSM acts as an important foundation for the European film industry, providing financial and creative support and promoting audience awareness.

"The European film industry and PSM play a critical role in defining European culture and society," Ms Nyberg Frankenhaeser said. "The values that impel European film-making also drive PSM. Both are socially diverse, creative, culturally rich, and instructive and offer qualitative programming."

To participate in the exchange, Members need to clear European rights for one locally produced feature film. It can be any genre, any length and from any period of cinematic history. In return, Members will be given access to a promotional package including: rights' free access to selected films, trailers, graphics, and on and off-air promotion for a week of special programming. Radio Members are also invited to participate.

The suggested window for the exchange is mid-November to mid-December. However Ms Nyberg Frankenhaeser said Members were also welcome to take a different approach to fit their programming schedules.
