EBU tech-i 17: UHDTV - Why? When? How?

The latest issue of tech-i , the EBU's quarterly technology and innovation magazine, takes a closer look at developments related to UHDTV. Out just in time for IBC 2013, it examines some of the key factors that will dictate when services are likely to be launched and how it will be done.

Plenty on UHDTV...

SVT's head of distribution Per Björkman presents his "Ultra HD equation", the combination of technologies that will ensure a successful launch of services. The article is based on a presentation he delivered to the recent joint EBU/DVB workshop on UHDTV, and the EBU's Hans Hoffmann provides a detailed report on that event. There's also a report on last June's groundbreaking shoot of the Eurovision Young Dancers contest in 3D 4kp50, plus David Wood exploring the question of frame rates

...and much more besides

But it's not all about UHD. There's an update from the EBU's Quality Control work, with the full set of EBU QC test criteria, which is set to be unveiled at IBC. A feature on access services includes reports from Germany and the Netherlands, as well as an update on EBU-TT developments.

Our Member profile in this issue comes from TDA, the Algerian broadcaster. There's a look at the latest moves in Europe related to regulation of media convergence, a review of the EBU's recent workshop on immersive audio over headphones, an introduction to using the semantic web, and an insight into the topic of software development for media.
