Top media minds ready for EBU Knowledge Exchange 2013

Media industry specialists and experts from EBU Member entities who will trade views and experiences at the inaugural EBU Knowledge Exchange (#KX13), have confirmed their participation on 30 September, in Barcelona.

Knowledge Exchange 2013 has been jointly set up by the EBU’s Media Intelligence Service (MIS) and the Departament de Comunicació Audiovisual i Publicitat de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), which is also this year’s host.

Its goal is to connect EBU Members with media academics and industry thinkers, so public service media leaders can prepare for the challenges posed by new technology, digitization and media convergence.

On the day, two expert panels will focus on how radio and television are each impacted by fast evolving media technologies, and the steps PSM should be taking to connect better with audiences.

Panel one will look at how radio can use technology to draw bigger, more engaged audiences. Bringing their ideas and experiences to this session, under the chairmanship of EBU Head of Radio Christian Vogg, will be:

  • Ignacio Gómez, Director of Multimedia Content RTVE Interactive Media;
  • Joël Ronez, Director of New Media at Radio France;
  • Björn Löfdahl, Programmes Director at Swedish Radio;
  • Tobias Groten, founder and board chairman at Tobit Software AG

The second panel will mull the socialization of television, and how connecting with the audience is essential to the medium’s success today. UAB Senior Lecturer Emilio Fernández Peña will chair the debate, with contributions from the following experts:

  • Francisco Asensi, Head of Business Development at RTVE Interactive Media
  • Wilko van Iperen, Head of Interactive at NCRV, the Dutch Christian Radio Association
  • Carlos Sànchez, Cofounder of The Data Republic / Tuitele

Head of EBU Media Intelligence Service, Roberto Suàrez Candel said: “The purpose of Knowledge Exchange is to give EBU Members access to a rich – and largely untapped – source of up-to-date strategic knowhow. We want to give our Members the tools they need to provide the best service possible with the resources available, because this is what audiences expect today.”

The debate programme will close with an open discussion about the strategies that public service media can employ to bond better with audiences.

In addition, Spanish EBU Member RTVE, led by the broadcaster’s Technical Director Pere Vila, will set up a showroom to present latest technological developments and new media productions and applications. The day will close with a networking session where participants can meet and share information and ideas.
