Europe Sings ‘production perfect’

320 choristers and musicians united on a single stage before a live audience of 50,000 in Vienna on Friday 9 May for Eurovision’s newest live event coproduction ‘Europe Sings.’

The concert, which featured a spectacular light show, formed the opening night of the annual Wiener Festwochen and was based on a successful format developed and showcased by host broadcaster ORF.

The eclectic musical programme featured classical choral excerpts from Verdi's Requiem, Mozart's opera Thamos, and Gustav Mahler's choral 2nd Symphony and culminated in choristers from Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Finland, France, Germany, Latvia and Lithuania joining as one to sing the European anthem 'Ode to Joy.'

The performance on Rathausplatz, Vienna's town hall, was streamed internationally on what was officially the 'Day of Europe,' transcending political and musical frontiers.
