EBU Digital Storytelling Labs Network holds hackathon in Stockholm

Around 40 journalists, developers and designers have taken part in the fourth meeting of the EBU Digital Storytelling Labs Network.

The group was made up of employees from 10 EBU Members, students and experts from Flic, FootballAddicts and Vigiglobe.

Sveriges Radio (SR) in Stockholm hosted the event on March 21-23 which saw a visit to SR Innovation (including SR's Digital Task Force team) and, for the first time, a hackathon.

Teams had 48 hours to prototype a project to “transform the European Football Championships into new engaging digital experiences in order to connect people.”

The aim of the hackathon was to produce an innovative prototype or concept for mobile tools, storytelling techniques and data gathering that will provide with an answer to the challenge of the hackathon, as well as a roadmap for implementation before June 2016. The brief was that the final projects should preferably use open source code and engage those between 20 and 35 years old who are non-football fans as well as those passionate about the sport.

Various ideas came out of the hackathon including a match predictor modelled on “Paul the Octopus” but using a puppy and a project where users are invited to empathise with the stars of the different teams.

Three prizes were awarded for: the most efficient team (those who come up with the most advanced product), the most relevant proposal and the most innovative/creative product proposal. EBU Executive Board Member and SR Director General Cilla Benko judged the final category.

The winners of most creative product and most relevant proposal were a team composed of EBU staff from the Sports and Technology and Innovation departments and colleagues from TVP Poland. They developed an audio-slideshow that offers digital newsrooms options to work with audio and photos.

The most efficient team prize was given to a group made up of representatives from RTVE, BBC, RTE, CR (Czech Radio), TVP and Vigiglobe.

The Digital Storytelling Labs meeting also saw presentations from SR’s Innovation team who showcased their structure, work, successes, failures and plans for the future as part of the Digital Storytelling Labs programme.
