EBU and OSCE cooperate on media freedom
03 mars 2011
EBU Director General Ingrid Deltenre and Dunja Mijatovic of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) have agreed that their two organizations should cooperate on issues concerning media freedom.
Ms Deltenre and Ms Mijatovic, the OSCE's Representative on Freedom of the Media, agreed to exchange information and to plan joint activities - for example a conference in Belarus on freedom of expression and media independence.
Meeting in Vienna, headquarters of the OSCE, the two chief executives also discussed Hungary's controversial new media law, on which both the EBU and the OSCE have expressed concerns.
Before proceeding to Budapest for a conference and discussions with Hungarian officials, the EBU DG also held talks on enhancing cooperation with the International Press Institute (IPI) and the South East Europe Media Organisation (SEEMO), an IPI affiliate, both of which are also based in Vienna. SEEMO is chaired by former EBU Vice-President Boris Bergant.
Ms Deltenre congratulated Alison Bethel McKenzie on her recent appointment as Director of IPI.
