BBC says it has major positive effect on UK economy

The BBC not only benefits audiences and society but also the UK economy, according to a new report which says every pound in licence fee generates two pounds in economic activity.

Updating a 2010 study by Deloitte, the new BBC report says expenditure of £4.3 billion (€5.2 billion) million on BBC public service and commercial activities in 2011/12 generated a "gross value added" of £8.3 billion (€ nearly 10 billion).

"The effect of initial BBC spending is 'multiplied' as it ripples through the economy from region to region and sector to sector," the report says.

EBU Media Director Annika Nyberg described the report as extremely interesting, and said it would be good to see similar studies conducted in other European countries.
