"New Neighbours" is about people who had to leave their home and try to integrate into a new neighbourhood, new village, new city, new society. But it also tells a story of locals, those who have to accept new neighbours.
Would locals accept their new neighbours? Or would arrival of newcomers produce tensions? What are the ethnical, religious and ethical dilemmas both sides face? Moving is stressful enough without having neighbours around, but they are inevitable – for both sides. The challenging process of integrating and accepting hopes and fears that occur during that time are in the focus of each documentary.
The project is co-financed by the European Commission and coordinated by the EBU and aims to better help the integration of migrants in their host communities.
With the launch of its third season of documentaries, the EBU is leading the way in mobilising the media and civil society towards greater intercultural understanding between both communities.
Nine EBU Members are taking part in this series, the co-production of which is supervised by the EBU Intercultural and Diversity Group. The documentaries will be released in November 2019.
Daniela Drastata, chairwoman of the EBU Intercultural and Diversity Group explains:
"I am delighted we have this great opportunity to see the EBU Intercultural and Diversity Group 's documentary collection New Neighbours growing and developing into an EU funded project that now involves organizations known for their excellence; we are working with "la crème de la crème" of people who recognise diversity as an opportunity.
By opening our prime time to refugees, asylum seekers and migrants, we show the complexity of integration at its core: we will not only tackle the most burning European topic but also create an inspiring and moving documentary series. Meeting our neighbours is undoubtedly the best reward for the challenges we will inevitably face during the film production. Let the adventure begin!"
