DAB+ radio coverage expands across Poland

EBU Member Polskie Radio is leading Eastern European broadcasters in their steady expansion of digital terrestrial radio, with more and more cities now covered by DAB+.

Wroclaw and Szczecin have joined Warsaw and Katowice as the latest cities in Poland to benefit from DAB+ programming by Polish Radio.

This expansion means that roughly a quarter of Poland’s population is now covered by digital radio, with Opole and Lodz soon to be added to the network.

President of the Board of Polish Radio and Member of the EBU Executive Board Andrzej Siezieniewski says four more cities will be included in the next few months.

"Given the limitations of analogue broadcasting and the high costs of Internet Provider-only connections, broadcasters have a duty to offer universal, easy access to radio signals,” Mr Siezieniewski said. “By extending the coverage of DAB+, we are meeting the needs of our listeners with all the additional benefits of digital terrestrial radio."

DAB+ advantages over analogue listening include clearer sound, more choice of stations and additional services like text, pictures, internet links and geo-referenced data.

Of the ten national DAB+ programmes planned by Polskie Radio, seven are currently operational; six will be available exclusively via DAB.

“Our goal remains to complete DAB+ coverage of Poland by 2020,” said Mr Siezieniewski.

There are there are more than 400 DAB+ services currently available to an estimated 160 million European listeners in Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Monaco, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the Vatican.
