The winner of this year's competition, which took place online, was Iain Chambers, for "Ivry-sur-Seine", entered by DEWDR. The artist said: "I’m really pleased to win the 2021 Palma Ars Acustica! Radio art is an important part of my work, and it’s an honour to join the list of previous winners of this prize like Hanna Hartman. Thank you."
The other finalists were:
- Alien Productions (ATORF) for "Performing Utopia", a radio opera
- Olga Kokcharova (CHRTS), for "The Ebbinghaus Curve of Forgetting"
- Adriana Kramarić | Marija Pečnik Kvesić (HRHRTR) for "Ars Mundi"
- Savannah Agger (SESR) for "Habitat"
All the entries in this year's PAA are available to EBU radio organizations in MUS.
Excerpts from comments by jury members on the selection of sounds and diversity of approaches in Iain Chambers' prizewinning work
Iain Chambers managed to accomplish the nearly impossible task - to rethink brutalist architecture in the medium of sound and in the human, sociological context while retaining compositional logic of highest degree. Ivry-sur-Seine is both confrontation - physical, tactile, aural, emotional confrontation - with living environment, and superb musique concrete in every moment of the piece.
With the three different accesses of sounds, you can follow this extremely physical piece very well, while it accelerates the sensitivity of the listener, a kind of signification of the respective place with the addition of three different perspectives.
