Hagerie TV has secured free-to-air media rights in Ethiopia for all World Athletics Series events through to 2029, becoming the ‘home of athletics in Ethiopia’.

The agreement marks a significant milestone as Hagerie TV becomes the first private Ethiopian broadcaster to obtain such comprehensive rights. Coverage will begin with the World Athletics Relays Gaborone 2026, taking place on 2-3 May 2026, the first World Athletics Series event to be held in Botswana.

Under the agreement, Hagerie TV will broadcast a wide range of premier competitions, including two editions of the World Athletics Championships (2027 and 2029), the World Athletics Indoor Championships in 2028, and the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in 2029.

The package also includes four editions of the World Athletics Road Running Championships, as well as the World Athletics U20 Championships in 2026 and 2028, showcasing emerging talent from Ethiopia and around the world.

The agreement with Hagerie TV was completed by Marketing & Media Solutions (MMS), following a sublicense from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), World Athletics’ exclusive distributor in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Niway Yimer, CEO, Hagerie TV said: “In a nation where running is in our DNA, we are proud to bring the ‘Home of Heroes’ directly to every household in Ethiopia. This partnership with World Athletics and MMS is our commitment to celebrating our national identity and ensuring every Ethiopian can witness our flag being raised live, free, and for years to come.”

Lord Sebastian Coe, President, World Athletics said: “Ethiopia has one of the great athletics traditions, and we are delighted that fans across the country will be able to watch World Athletics Series events free-to-air through this new partnership with Hagerie TV

"This agreement will bring our biggest events closer to millions of people in Ethiopia, while showcasing the performances of Ethiopian athletes alongside the best in the world.”
