EBU reacts to call for evidence of online piracy of live content
10 February 2023
Live content is a core pillar of public service media's offering to audiences. The EBU and Warner Bros. Discovery Inc. have been awarded the media rights in Europe for the Olympic Games from 2026-2032. Public service media must make significant investments to acquire exclusivity for the transmission of content. Meanwhile, they are constantly threatened by illegitimate actors, who are and must remain responsible for the illegal use of the same content.
With this consultation, the European Commission aims to combat the piracy of live content online and offline. Existing legal instruments are a solid basis to fight against piracy in general; built on that foundation, specific measures might be necessary to tackle the illegal transmission of broadcasting content done on a live basis.
