Beethoven piano concerto chosen for special Euroradio Music Exchange 50th anniversary concert
27 July 2017
To mark the 50th anniversary of the EBU's regular music exchanges, the EBU recently invited listeners to choose their favourite of four piano concertos selected by young Russian pianist Pavel Kolesnikov.
Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 ("Emperor") was the winner with the other three choices being Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1, Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2 and Ravel's Piano Concerto for the Left Hand.
The winning concerto will be played by Pavel Kolesnikov at a special concert by the BBC Concert Orchestra on the exact anniversary day, 27 November 2017. The BBC and Euroradio will transmit the concert live.
"I am very pleased that Beethoven 5 won the vote," said Kolesnikov. "I promise I didn't vote myself, but this concerto was, indeed, my secret choice. It's a piece of unparalleled grandeur and finesse. I'm very much looking forward to performing it!"
Pavel Kolesnikov has just completed his time as a BBC New Generation Artist.
The EBU Music team thanks everyone who voted. More information about the concert will be available soon.
