Media Lunchtime Talk: Reporting the refugee crisis

During the past few weeks the media all over Europe have been extensively reporting on the refugee and migrant crisis. Despite most of them reporting responsibly, a number of questions arose about the limits of publishing sensitive images.

The debate will focus on the importance of ethical reporting, the roles and responsibilities of media and journalists in countering stereotypes and hate speech in traditional and online media. The panelists will try to answer if it’s feasible and how to factually tell a human-focused story that is highly emotional, without sensationalism and dehumanising migrants and refugees.

The panel will include:

  • Jean-Paul Marthoz (Moderator), Committee to Protect Journalists EU Correspondent
  • Ana Gomes, MEP, S&D Portugal
  • Alain Genestar, Editor in Chief of Polska Magazine
  • Bruno Boelpaep, Europe Producer, BBC News Brussels
