Legal: EBU assists Parliamentary Committee draft new Law on PSB in Kosovo

As part of its activities to promote European standards and best practices regarding media freedom and public service media, the EBU has assisted the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo in finalizing a new law on Radio Television of Kosovo (RTK), the public broadcaster in Kosovo.

Together with another international expert,  Professor Sandra Bašic Hrvatim (representing the European Commission), Dr Michael Wagner (EBU Legal) participated in a special seminar organized by the Parliamentary Committee for the Media on 15-17 October 2011 in Prevallë/Prizren (Kosovo).

Among the key issues discussed were legal safeguards to ensure the institutional autonomy, editorial independence and sustainable funding of RTK and arrangements for the planned launch of a second channel, for the Serbian minority in Kosovo. The new legislation, which is at second reading stage, is expected to be passed later this year.

The EBU has a cooperation agreement with RTK, which underscores the EBU's commitment to public service broadcasting in the region. Since 1999, the EBU has played a major role in supporting the establishment of independent public service broadcasting in Kosovo.
