Madrid, 23 May, 2011 – 15 EBU Members* will broadcast a special concert** by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra held at the National Auditorium of Music, Madrid on 24 May.

Ingrid Deltenre, EBU Director General, said:

“I would like to applaud TVE, the host broadcaster of the event, for working so closely with the EBU and for providing such a high-quality classical music event that the EBU can broadcast to the world. This is the best of public service media programming for European audiences.”

Under the baton of renowned conductor Daniele Gatti the orchestra is performing Gustav Mahler’s 9th Symphony on 24 May as part of a week of celebrations to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the composer’s death.

The performance will be recorded in high definition and transmitted by satellite to EBU Members for radio and television broadcast.

Ms Deltenre added:

“This is the second very successful collaboration with TVE this year on classical music. EBU Members are delighted with TVE’s contribution to their classical music schedules.”

The first collaboration was in January on the occasion of Placido Domingo’s 70th birthday. TVE, Teatro Real in Madrid and the BBC presented a special tribute gala to the tenor.
