Initiative to abolish licence fee in Romania rejected
03 February 2011
The Romanian Parliament's Committee for Culture, Arts and Mass Media has rejected an initiative by the Social Democratic Party and Conservative Party to abolish the TV licence fee.
On 6 December, EBU Director General Ingrid Deltenre wrote to Romania's Senate and Chamber of Deputies opposing the initiative, saying abolition of the fee would make it quite impossible for TV Romania to operate as a public service broadcaster to European standards. She urged Romania's Parliamentarians to withdraw or resist the proposal.
The Committee for Culture, Arts and Mass Media subsequently discussed the initiative and decided to recommend that the Chamber of Deputies reject the proposal. "The opinion of the majority was that it is absolutely necessary to maintain the same way of financing in order to allow the public television service to fulfil its public mission," Committee chair Raluca Turcan wrote in reply to the EBU.
TVR has thanked the EBU for its "invaluable help and cooperation".
