Bringing EBU subtitles to the Timed Text era

The EBU Group on Subtitles in XML has been working at top speed during recent weeks on a guide to help users convert their existing EBU STL Subtitling files into the new EBU Timed Text (EBU Tech 3350) format.

The new guide will explain how to position text, use layout options, carry metadata, embed the original STL binary, etc. Besides making it easy for users to start using EBU-TT, the guide intends to minimize the number of different ways in which STL files are converted, thereby maximizing interoperability between systems.

The draft “STL to EBU-TT” guide and related example files are available for any professional wanting to review the work. Simply send a mail to [email protected] to obtain the information. Comments and feedback are welcome, ideally before 31 January. An informal description of what the guide is about can be found here.
