New tech-i: future of media delivery, new audio formats and more

Plenty of debate currently surrounds the future of the terrestrial delivery platform, as reflected in the latest issue of the EBU's quarterly magazine tech-i, with a special focus on that topic. Articles include an overview of the key issues related to the ITU decision to make the 700 MHz band available for mobile broadband services and a comparison of the relative strengths and weaknesses of broadcast and broadband for media delivery. There's also an update from the EBU's strategic programme on Spectrum Management and a report from our Brussels office on the EU's digital priorities.

Elsewhere in this issue you can find two articles looking at the future of audio formats in broadcasting. Matthieu Parmentier of France Télévisions provides an insight into the resurgence of binaural audio - the subject for an upcoming EBU workshop - while BBC's Chris Pike explains how the BWF file format is being updated to allow it to deliver more immersive audio experiences for audiences.

The EBU's Technical Liaison Officers have been in place for more than a year now, with the system shaping up to be a very useful communication channel with and between the Members. This issue of tech-i includes a progress report on the first year and introduces some of the current TLOs.

Other articles include:

  • Solving the satellite jamming problem
  • Member Profile: Swedish Television
  • Introducing the Intercom Interoperability guidelines
  • In the Spotlight: Klaus Illgner, IRT
  • David Wood looks at engineers and creativity
