EBU invites industry to key video over IP interop tests

The use of IP-based systems in broadcasting brings many advantages, but also requires the development of new standards in many areas. One example is for the transport of video and audio content prior to broadcast, over what are known as contribution links. Manufacturers are keen to develop products that implement new standards for video contribution, but before EBU Members and other broadcasters invest in new equipment they need to be confident that it will perform as expected. Interoperability is a key requirement.

Two sets of tests

The EBU is organizing interoperabilty testing for two IP-based video contribution technologies that are set to become key elements of the broadcaster's toolbox in future. The tests will be designed to equip both broadcasters and manufacturers with essential information about interoperability performance in typical contribution applications.

The first set of tests, taking place from 28-31 May, will concern the new SMPTE 2022-5/6 standards for carriage of uncompressed video over IP. These tests will be hosted by the BBC R&D Research Centre in London.

In October attention will turn to the transport of JPEG 2000 over IP, which is used on several contribution networks for high quality, low latency video transport. This second set of tests will take place at the EBU in Geneva (to be confirmed).

Anonymous Results

Both equipment manufacturers and broadcasters are invited to participate in the testing. The results will be made available to EBU Members, participating manufacturers and partners. All results will be anonymous.

The tests are taking place under the umbrella of the EBU project group on VCIP - Video Contribution over IP.  The group, which includes participation from EBU Members and non-members, has been closely following the progress of standardization work in SMPTE and VSF (Video Services Forum). The group will publish reports for EBU Members based on the results of the interoperability tests.

Join the Tests

Equipment manufacturers and broadcasters are invited to participate in both sets of tests.

  • Test 1: SMPTE 2022-5/6 (May)
  • Test 2: JPEG 2000/TS over IP (October)
