It was a scream! - 39th IFC in Bergen

It was a scream!

The 39th Euroradio International Features Conference (IFC) took place in Bergen on 13-16 May at the kind invitation of NRK. More than a hundred delegates participated in this annual and unique event devoted to radio documentaries.

Preselected programmes from 21 different broadcasting organizations were played in plenary session each day, and then discussed in breakout groups.

The Conference also featured impressive presentations and special addresses:

  • Bo-Göran Bodin and Daniel Öhman from SR (Sweden) introduced their radio documentary about the sale of arms by Swedes in Saudi Arabia. Not only did the programme lead to the resignation of the Swedish Defense Minister, but it also won major prizes, including Prix Europa for Best Investigative Documentary;
  • Equally impressive was Asbjørn Rachlew's special address about police interview techniques. Asbjørn Rachlew was central in the interrogation process of the mass murderer Anders Behring;
  • Julian Treasure spoke about the "power of sounds", or how sounds - and noises - do affect our everyday lives (you can listen to a previous talk by him here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5nbWUOc9tY).

Special workshops and sessions also took place in the mornings and evenings - all in all, a pretty intense but fascinating and unique event, wonderfully organized by NRK (Norway).

This IFC was also an opportunity to elect a new Euroradio Features Group:

Lorelei HARRIS, RTE (Ireland) - Chair
Willem DAVIDS, NPO-RVU (Netherlands) - Vice-Chair
Hege DAHL, NRK (Norway)
Simon ELMES, BBC (United Kingdom)
Harri HUHTAMAKI, YLE (Finland)
Ulf KOEHLER, ARD/MDR (Germany)
Silvia LAHNER, ORF (Austria)
Kasia MICHALAK, PR (Poland)

Next year will be the 40th anniversary of the IFC, and it will be hosted by MDR in Leipzig (Germany)
