EBU and European Athletics launch 'Visual Radio' signal for European Championships

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and European Athletics will transmit a 'Visual Radio' signal for the first time at the Zurich 2014 European Athletics Championships.

The Visual Radio project, developed by Euroradio, consists of a live data slideshow showing live results and pictures of the event.

European Athletics’ partners Swiss Timing, the official timekeeping and data-handling company, and Getty Images, the official photo agency, will feed content to Euroradio during the championships (12 to 17 August).

This slideshow can be delivered on different platforms chosen, as needed, by participating broadcasters:

  • DAB+ Slideshow - the images are broadcast alongside the radio program and displayed on DAB+ digital radios with colour screens, available on applicable car receivers.
  • Hybrid Radio (RadioVIS/RadioDNS) working with FM or digital radio - the hybrid radio receivers automatically download and display images as they are produced. The EBU has created a RadioDNS server for broadcasters that want to start using hybrid radio without having to deploy their own infrastructure.
  • Web - a javascript component has been designed that can be embedded on broadcasters' webpages.

If broadcasters already have a visual radio flow and infrastructure, they can simply integrate the raw images into their existing workflow.

All these tools are available on the new EBU platform for exchange of software and services for broadcasting at

The source code is also available for further development or integration by broadcasters in their own infrastructure.

Finally, an English audio feed will be embedded with this visual production and made available worldwide via the Eurovision Sports LIVE App.
