Public service media across Europe condemn Charlie Hebdo killings
08 January 2015
Members of the European Broadcasting Union have united in their condemnation of yesterday's shooting at the Paris office of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo that left twelve dead.
In a show of respect, staff from the organization's Geneva headquarters gathered outside its offices with banners that read 'Je suis Charlie' (I am Charlie), a reference to the hashtag that is trending on Twitter in solidarity with the victims.
One of the twelve victims was Bernard Maris, a former journalist and producer at EBU Member Radio France/France Inter. Four of the magazine's well-known cartoonists, including its editor, were also killed, as well as two police officers.
Condemning the atrocity in the most severe of terms, EBU President Jean Paul Philippot described the attack as an unacceptable assault on freedom of expression.
“Freedom of expression, a fundamental democratic value, has been violated in the most cruel way,” Mr Philippot said. “Our heartfelt sympathies reach out to the families and the colleagues of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. The European Broadcasting Union stands in defense of the media – the guarantors of diversity and tolerance, the pillars of a free and democratic society.”
Elsewhere, Members of the EBU demonstrated their solidarity in similar ways.
