EBU Director General: Gamechangers facing the media ecosystem
05 March 2015
The EBU Director General Ingrid Deltenre has identified four game-changers the media ecosystem is currently facing.
Speaking to a visiting group of high-level delegates from South Korea, lead by Mr Moon Jong Hong, Member of the National Assembly and Chairmain of the Science, ICT, Future Planning Broadcasting and Communication Committee, Ingrid Deltenre defined the role of the EBU as "supporting and strengthening the concept of public service media in Europe." Ms Deltenre gave a short introduction about the EBU, the role of public service media in Europe and the game-changing developments taking place in the broadcasting industry. She touched upon the increasing globalization and concentration within the media industry, topics related to multiplatform production and distribution and the opportunities of understanding and serving the audience better in order to remain relevant in the on-demand-world.
She noted that vertical integration of platform operators with broadcasters and production companies is also changing the game. This is why the policy objectives of the EBU are to ensure media diversity and net neutrality as well as the access and findability of great content. She also pointed to the fact, that the existing copyright rules did not reflect the fact of the ever greater mobility of people and the accessibility of content on all devices. For the EBU, these topics are of key importance.
The members of the Korean delegation also wanted to discuss matters of common interest including media industry regulation, copyright legislation, convergence issues and the popularity of the "Korean Wave" of popular culture for content producers in Europe.
"The EBU unites global communities while global competition stimulates us to focus even more on content and creativity. We will continue to lead the way in innovation in the public interest." Ms Deltenre concluded.
