12 April 2016
Former EBU Vice President and RAI Director General Claudio Cappon has been elected Secretary General of COPEAM (Permanent Conference of the Mediterranean Audiovisual Operators) following its 22nd General Assembly in Ajaccio.
Chairman of Tele Liban Talal El Makdessi has been appointed President for a second term while Paola Parri has been elected Deputy Secretary General. Other newly appointed officials include Markus Nikel of RAI as Chair of the TV Committee; Lalia Behidj of EPRS Algeria as Chair of the Gender Equality Committee; Larbi Megari from EPTV as Chair of the News Committee; Margherita Scanavino from RAI as Chair of the Audiovisual Heritage Commission; Alessandra Paradisi from RAI as Chair of the Strategic Committee; and Raouf El Housseini of Tunisian Radio as Chair of the Finance Committee.
Young people were the centre of the debate at the conference. EBU Director of Media Jean Philip De Tender showcased the new Generation What Europe project which is the first ever transmedia project bringing together EBU Members to create a profile of young people across Europe. The idea of a Generation What project dedicated to the Arab region was discussed extensively and a series of public events across the region are on the verge of being finalized. RAI's President and EBU's Vice President, Monica Maggioni, closed the session by announcing that RAI will launch a series of initiatives dedicated to young audiences, strengthening their multi and cross platform offerings.
The conference also unanimously approved the Ajaccio Final Resolution inviting authorities and media across the Mediterranean to take action to protect their common cultural heritage. After the events in Palmira and across Libya, the media are encouraged to promote awareness of respective cultural heritage monuments ie Arab sites in Europe and Roman sites in North Africa, so the younger generations understand the different layers of their civilizations and can be encouraged to protect them.
