Tribute paid to former COPEAM Secretary General at 23rd annual Conference

The XXIII Annual Conference of COPEAM (Permanent Conference of the Mediterranean Audiovisual Operators) has opened in Ajaccio in Corsica with a tribute, by COPEAM President Talel El Makdessi, to the organisaton’s Secretary General, Pier Luigi Malesani, who died on 19 March.

Pier Luigi Malesani was an economist by training and - before being appointed in 2012 to head the COPEAM - had a career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy (where he was charge of international cooperation, especially with countries in the Horn of Africa) and the IRI, the holding company which included the industrial interests of the state.

He came to public service broadcasting in the late 90s, when he was appointed Director of International Relations of Italian EBU Member RAI. In this role he represented RAI in the EBU and greatly contributed to the reform of the statutes of the organision which led to its current governance structure.

Malesani was Secretary General of the Prix Italia between 2008 and 2011. He was also Chairman of the Euronews Supervisory Board, a position he left when he retired from RAI.

After his retirement Malesani was confirmed as the head of RAI International Company, which deals with issues of RAI outside Italian territory, and for 8 years was the head of Mher (Media House Rome), the EBU company that deals in particular with coverage of events happening in the Vatican. He was also named Commendatore dell'Ordine di Sant'Agata (San Marino) and Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters and the National Order of Merit (France)

“Pier Luigi Malesani was a man deeply committed and dedicated to the cause of public service,” said EBU Director General Ingrid Deltenre. “He had strong moral convictions and was animated by a desire to serve citizens and the weakest in society. That's why he greatly contributed to the debate in the EBU, also agreeing to take care of some EBU companies like Mher. With his sudden death, the EBU loses one of its best supporters and we have all lost a great friend. "

The XXIII Annual Conference of COPEAM is being held at invitation of  Region Corsica, France 3 Corse and Corse FM Radio.
