EBU Members pick up top honours at inaugural Migration Media Awards

EBU Members were among the journalists who claimed the top prizes at the inaugural Migration Media Awards. This new EU-funded journalism competition rewards journalists for their coverage of migration in the Euro-Mediterranean region.

The winning entries featured fact-based and impartial reporting on the complexity of migration, its main challenges and opportunities. RTBF and BBC Xtra both took first prizes in the radio category for 'Egypt, Land of Migrants' and 'Irregular Migrants' families in Algeria' respectively. The BBC, RTP, Deutsche Welle, RFI, RTS and HRT also took home awards for their coverage in video, radio and online reporting.

An international jury, composed of senior journalists, evaluated over 120 applications. Jury member Aidan White from the Ethical Journalism Network said: “This kind of reporting does great credit to the cause of public-interest journalism. It shines a powerful light on the humanitarian and policy challenges of the recent ‘migration crisis’. The authors raise questions that cannot be ignored and challenge those who come up with easy answers."

The award ceremony was held on 14th June in Valletta, Malta, under the auspices of Malta's EU presidency.
