Exploring racism in sport with FC United

In the spring of 2021, VRT Canvas aired a three-part documentary series focusing on the debate about racism and diversity in Belgian football. Reports of racism in football are never far from the headlines, and diversity across the sport is lagging behind. So VRT Canvas decided to tackle it head on by uncovering the actual experiences of some of Belgium’s top players including Romelu Lukaku, the Belgium international and Chelsea FC striker. Referees such as Jonathon Lardot and journalists Filip Joos spoke openly about their experiences of racism and the need for greater diversity throughout the sport.
