Gathering voices and viewpoints with Pop-up Diversity
VRT has a number of unique ways of engaging with diversity within the workplace. This also applies to content for radio, television and its digital platforms.
A total of 46% of Belgian children aged 0-17 have at least one parent with a migration background, for whom Belgian is not their first nationality or who is registered as non-Belgian (source: StatBel 2021).
On the basis of these figures, it became clear to people at VRT that they must reflect the full range of demographics in their content if they want to fulfil their public service remit, which includes the principles of Diversity and Universality.
Meet Pop-up Diversity, crafted by the organization’s Diversity Team. This aims to improve the range of voices and points of views covered in programming. The idea is to open a pop-up shop. Instead of having the Diversity Teams stuck on their own in their offices, with colleagues calling in from time to time for advice, the opposite applies.
