Eurovision and Euroradio to bring New Year’s Concert to the World

On 1 January 2013 more than 40* European Broadcasting Union (EBU) Members will be able to broadcast the world’s best-loved annual classical music spectacular – the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra New Year’s Concert – thanks to Eurovision and Euroradio.

Since 2009 the EBU has delivered the high point of the live classical music calendar to more than 40 countries under a concert package with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (VPO). The current EBU-VPO agreement for the media rights of the three of concerts in the package runs until 2017.

Nations further afield will also broadcast the New Year’s Concert for the first time, including Cuba, Panama, India and South Africa, as well as Bhutan, Samoa and Tonga, raising the total number of countries airing the event to 80.

Taking place at Vienna's Musikverein Concert Hall, the concert is produced by Austrian public broadcaster and EBU Member ORF. It will be recorded in both Standard and High Definition and distributed globally on the EBU’s Eurovision and Euroradio satellite and fibre networks. Broadcasters can also live stream the concert on their websites, provided the stream is geo-blocked.

EBU Media Director Annika Nyberg Frankenhaeuser said: “The event’s host broadcaster, ORF, is providing a high-quality classical concert that Eurovision and Euroradio will deliver to Europe and far beyond. This is the best of cultural public service media programming for audiences.”

The 2013 New Year's Concert will be conducted for the second time by the Austrian conductor Franz Welser-Möst, who is General Music Director of the Vienna State Opera and Music Director of the Cleveland Orchestra. Since their first concert together in 1998, Franz Welser-Möst and the Vienna Philharmonic have performed numerous concerts at home and abroad, including the Summer Night Concert Schönbrunn 2010 and the New Year's Concert 2011.
