EBU WELCOMES TUNISIA'S INDEPENDENT AUDIOVISUAL AUTHORITY

On 3 May, the launch of an independent High Authority for Audiovisual Communication (HAICA) in Tunisia was announced.

The creation of such an independent authority was recommended and supported by several organisations - including the EBU - at the April 2013 Seminar in Tunis on normative and institutional guarantees for freedom speech. The Seminar was organized at the initiative of the Council of Europe, the Arab Institute of Human Rights and the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie.

The HAICA comprises 8 members and is headed by Nouri Lejmi, University Professor at the IPSI (Press Institute for Information Sciences).

Tunisia's President, Moncef Marzouki, announced the creation of the HAICA during a ceremony held in Carthage for World Press Freedom Day. After repeated postponements, the establishment of the HAICA represents a first concrete step in the development of free, independent and pluralistic media in Tunisia.
