Junior Eurovision Song Contest gets creative

Ukraine is to extend its national theme ‘The Year of Children’s Creativity’ to this year’s Junior Eurovision Song Contest which will take place in the capital Kyiv on Saturday 30 November.

Host broadcaster and EBU Member NTU has also revealed the presenters for the evening: Timur Miroshnychenko, who hosted the event in Kyiv in 2009, and Zlata Ognevich, who performed in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden.

NTU Director General Oleksandr Panteleimonov says the theme was an obvious choice.

“Our young contestants have a natural talent for music, and with the help of their parents and teachers are exploring new ways to express their creativity,” he said.

Eurovision Executive Supervisor, Vladislav Yakovlev agrees: “Creativity is one of the event’s key values. We encourage our young contestants to make the most of the experience – to make new friends and celebrate one another’s achievements.”

Eleven year old Ukrainian Anastasiya Petryk, who won last year’s competition with 'Nebo,' which translates to Sky, will make a special guest performance at the event at the National Palace of Arts, Ukraine.

On average, about a dozen contestants representing their countries perform live before millions of PSM viewers watching across Europe on TV, or online, via media streams.

Prizes are awarded for first, second and third place winners representing broadcasting Members of the EBU.

Unlike the Eurovision Song Contest, hosting rights are not automatically bestowed on the home country of the winning contestant. The Host Broadcaster is decided in a bidding process led by the Steering Group, which is made up by representatives of the EBU.
