The opening evening of the continent's biggest live music industry gathering, the Eurosonic Noordeslag Festival in Groningen, the Netherlands, saw Irish rock band Kodaline scoop up the top accolade of 'Public Choice' through an online vote.

The European Border Breakers Awards (EBBA Awards) recognise the best new music acts in Europe which have achieved cross-border success.

Kodaline, the Dublin based rock quarter, which are currently on a world tour following the success of their debut album 'In a Perfect World,' performed on stage at the show, which was available to EBU Members on Euroradio 2See in a live webcast.

Before they were known as Kodaline, the foursome made history in Ireland by being the first unsigned band ever to have a number one hit with 'Give Me A Minute.'

The awards, presented by BBC music host legend Jools Holland, also featured performances by most of the other 2014 winners: GuGabriel (Austria), Lukas Graham (Denmark), Asgeir (Iceland), Jacco Gardner (Netherlands), and Nico & Vinz (Norway). The acts Zedd (Germany),  Icona Pop (Sweden) and Disclosure (United Kingdom) sent video messages. Former EBBA Award winner Caro Emerald (Netherlands) and Norwegian singer Maria Mena also performed at the show.

Once again, EBU organisations will be at the heart of the festival, which runs until 18 January with involvement from 26 Member broadcasters supporting 28 acts and sponsorship from the European Commission.

The festival helps stimulate the cross-border circulation of music and highlight Europe's great musical diversity.
