EBU broadcasters share latest newsroom innovations at TF1

News professionals from across Europe gathered in Paris for the 6th News & Technology Seminar to explore the latest editorial and technological innovations, and discover the inner workings of the French broadcaster TF1 newsroom.

More than 110 participants from 35 EBU Member broadcasters took part in the event, hosted at TF1 headquarters.

Opening the seminar, Catherine Nayl, Executive Vice President, News & Information (TF1) said that all broadcasters must enhance their creativity in the changing news market, illustrating the increasing necessity for sharing technical innovation.

TF1 anchorman Gilles Bouleau and senior reporter Michel Scott kicked off the seminar with a session explaining how TF1's newsroom produces content for more than 16 million viewers. Participants also had the opportunity to witness the newsroom staff in action during guided tours.

This year’s seminar provided many interesting presentations, from SVT’s experience on building an IP studio to RTBF’s fully-automated tri-media studio that enables journalists to manage the whole of their broadcast without any technical help.

In other sessions, participants learned about various news apps developed by ARD, YLE, RTBF, and NRK; as well as about TF1’s experience in using drones in newsgathering. Glen Mulcahy of RTE and Mark Egan from the Eurovision ACADEMY faculty shared practical tips on how to shoot broadcast-quality video with an iPhone.

One of the highlights of the seminar proved to be TF1’s Director of Technologies, Hervé Pavard’s insightful take on the future of the news technology. Despite the importance of technological innovation, he cautioned broadcasters not to put technology ahead of content.

The News & Technology seminar is organised annually by the EBU’s News & Technology Subcommittee. The main focus of the seminar is to provide a forum for EBU Members to share their experiences with editorially-driven new technologies, as they search for new, cost-effective ways to produce and deliver multiplatform content.
