The EBU's Media Online team in partnership with Irish Member RTE brought together innovative digital publishers from around the world for a jam-packed day of inspiring case studies.

Over 80 delegates from online media congregated at the National Digital Research Center in Dublin to discover the latest trends. The summit touched upon everything digital - from digital consumers to transmedia and immersive storytelling to social strategies.

The two keynote speakers set the scene for the rest of the day, delving straight into today's digital culture of expected transparency and personalized digital experiences.

Jay Rosen, Professor of Journalism at New York University, urged online journalists to "do what you do best, link to the rest. And show your work, show what both sides are saying, and when you can, show the truth."

Andy Thoms, who takes care of Google's relationship with broadcasters, explained how Google always develops products with everyone in mind. He told the crowd that "www doesn't just mean world wide web, it stands for what we want, when we want, where we want."

Making space for digital innovation

Participants were given insight into the inner workings of successful publishers, like Al Jazeera's youth-engagement news hub AJ+. The station has already accumulated over a billion views across its platforms, and boasts a 600% engagement rate on Facebook.

RTE's Head of Drama Jane Gogan showed how Storyland is giving emerging Irish dramas the chance to be seen worldwide through its online player.

EBU Members VRT and RTVE presented the latest content formats being tested in their digital labs. Head of VRT Start-up Ezra Eeman mentioned that "to build a lab you don't need much. We only have a team of 4 people. It's about starting a culture of exploring what works."

EBU Head of Media Online Mike Mullane wrapped up the meeting by summarizing the main reoccuring themes: "Let's remember: you can do a lot with little; engagement is the new black, and we must all have an appetite for collaboration."

Presentations from the day will be available from Thursday 29 October on the Online Media Summit event page.
