Alexander Velev elected as Director General of BNR

Alexander Velev has been unanimously elected as the new Director General of Bulgarian National Radio (BNR).

Velev has spent most of his professional career at BNR where he started working as a journalist in 1990. He started the Free Speech Syndicate with a group of fellow journalists in 1995 and went on to be Chief Editor and Director of Channel Horizont as well as the correspondent for BNR in Macedonia.

Velev served a term as Director General of BNR in 1998, at the age of 35. He continued to work for BNR as a correspondent in both Serbia and Germany. More recently he has been working for the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On being elected he said: “The national radio is an institution serving as a guarantee for the democracy. It has to be the media with the highest level of social trust.”

Velev was elected unanimously by the Council for Electronic Media. He will serve a three year term in office starting today.
