EBU Members help to open iconic new Hamburg concert hall

On 11 January, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra will take up residence in the Grand Hall of Hamburg's stunning new performance space on the banks of the Elbe.

The inaugural concert, which kicks off a three-week festival celebrating the new venue, is being offered live to EBU Radio Members via the Euroradio satellite network under MUS reference EURO/2016-2017/PC/032 and is also available as a live video stream on the Euroradio 2See platform.

Three Euroradio Member ensembles, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, NDR Chorus and Bavarian Radio Chorus, will accompany such world-class singers as the soprano Camilla Tilling, countertenor Philippe Jaroussky and bass Sir Bryn Terfel in works by Beethoven, Wagner and Britten, among others. There will also be the world première of a piece composed especially for the occasion by Wolfgang Rihm. More detailed programme information will be available as from 11 January at: https://www.elbphilharmonie.de/en/whats-on/elbphilharmonie-opening/7388

Designed by the Swiss architectural firm of Herzog & de Meuron, the Elbphilharmonie complex, whose impressive glass exterior, made up of over 1,000 curved window panels, extends over 100 metres into the sky to create a wave-like silhouette, is built on top of the Kaispeicher, an old warehouse on Hamburg's historic waterfront. The complex consists of a 2,100-seat concert hall, a 550-seat recital hall, restaurants and rehearsal spaces, as well as a public plaza, already opened in November, offering a 360° panorama over the city.
