EBU puts forward views to European Commission on online violence against women journalists

Today we responded to a European Commission consultation on the topic of online gender-based violence. Women journalists and media professionals are increasingly the targets of gender-based online violence aimed at discrediting them, humiliating them and silencing them. Our asks for the EU include: targetted intervention by platforms to remove illegal content; user-friendly tools to flag illegal behaviour; and reliable data collection by platforms on incidences of online violence. We also believe that national regulatory authorities for the media should be involved in any future EU proposal addressing online violence targeting women journalists and media professionals.
