The EBU Contributes to The European Commission’s Consultation on Generative AI

On 11 March 2024, the EBU responded to the European Commission’s call for public contributions on Competition in Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). Our submission highlights the challenges generative AI poses to the media and makes the case for policies and regulations that foster innovation while allowing public service media to benefit from Generative AI.

Generative AI can enable significant advancement in content creation within audiovisual media, offering many opportunities for innovation. The integration of generative AI into digital platform services can reshape the media sector fundamentally and help redefine how media content is experienced and consumed. Such possibilities have important implications for stakeholders such as public service media (PSM) and news publishers.

Generative AI can strengthen the intermediary role of online platforms in accessing different kinds of news and media content. AI-driven platforms, including answer engines and virtual assistants, have become better at providing personalized content and have the potential to become comprehensive media hubs for users.
