Distinguished AI Professor Sir Nigel Shadbolt helps set the scene for today’s discussion. He talks to Zoe about the significance of recent GenAI developments, the ethical challenges, and the important role public service media can play in engaging the public in current debates.

The EBU and its Members will present their most innovative AI projects at the Globe, curated by the EBU T&I Department.

EBU Deputy Director General Jean Philip De Tender introduces the session on public service media strategy with an overview of the EBU’s role in supporting broadcasters.

Our panel will focus on how public service broadcasters are currently using AI, the impact it is having on their corporate strategy, guidelines on usage, and partnerships with the wider industry.

Microsoft’s Chief Scientific Officer Eric Horvitz gives us an overview of where he believes GenAI developments will take us five years from now. He discusses responsible AI, the need for regulation and cultivating partnerships to safeguard access to trusted news and information. 

Our two European AI pioneers - Laurent Daudet and Dr Inma Martinez – will then give their take on recent advancements, the regulatory environment, and the stakes for Europe.

This presentation on the strategic implications of AI for PSM will focus on the critical role broadcasters can play to set the bar on how media interacts with AI, to verify and validate accuracy of information as custodians of truth, and to champion human creativity in an AI world.

This session focuses on the vital role of public service media in upholding democratic values and ethics in the face of exponential advancements in AI technology in the increasingly polarized world. Our panelists will explore the unique opportunity for PSM to position itself as a safeguard against the potential negative impacts of AI and the importance of delivering trusted news and media literacy to our audiences to make informed decisions. How can media organizations maintain ethical standards while embracing this new technology?

This presentation will outline how AI is changing the way we formulate problems, validate solutions and design the computing models for High Energy Physics, focusing in particular on the ongoing research at CERN.

The rapid growth of AI use, particularly generative AI, pushes PSM organisations to consider emerging issues in compliance with existing law, including IP protection, data privacy, and consumer protection. PSM must also pay attention to new regulatory initiatives at international and European levels, such as the EU AI Act and the Council of Europe’s Convention on AI. This involves understanding AI related risks and developing appropriate AI governance framework to address these challenges and maintain public trust in PSM values. Our expert panel will look at the impact of new AI regulations and explore the legal challenges and implications of the rapidly growing use of AI.

In his closing address, the UN Tech Envoy will provide a brief outlook on what is expected to be happening in the broader AI Industry in the coming years, the role of UN in driving the conversation, and how we can prepare for leveraging and harnessing the power of AI to our own advantage to create a better tomorrow.
