Talent of the Future
23 April 2012
Universities and colleges everywhere run internal television stations, which are crucibles for the broadcasting talent of the future.
The UK is no exception, where the National Students Television Association (NaSTA) encourages student TV in many ways. They include annual awards for different genres of programmes made by students.
This year NaSTA invited EBU Deputy Director Technology & Development David Wood to judge the award for the best live television. His winner was the UK's Nottingham University for reality show 'The Hall', a 52-hour live marathon in a sealed part of a university hall of residence, where student viewers progressively voted off their least favourite contestants.
David Wood said, "I really loved Nottingham's entry because of its style and originality – and it made me laugh. I also gave a special commendation to Loughborough University for their live coverage of a poker championship. It was full of original elements. There is so much talent out there - the future of television will be safe hands."
