Royal welcome as Rose d’Or returns to Eurovision

Rose d'Or 2012

Princess Astrid and Prince Lorenz of Belgium will be guests of honour at this year’s Rose d’Or, Europe's foremost and longest-running international gala for entertainment television, on May 30.

The event will be staged in the royal couple's home city of Brussels by Eurovision, which re-acquired hosting rights to the Rose d'Or last year.

Eurovision Media Director Annika Nyberg Frankenhaeuser says this will be the first time the event has taken place outside Switzerland, since its inception in 1961.

"We intend to scatter a little Eurovision magic on the awards, which are a celebration of the best of the best in entertainment programming," Ms Nyberg Frankenhaeuser said.

Excitement for the event is building. This year has seen a 38 per cent increase in entries across all six categories – Comedy, Sitcom, Game Show, Reality & Factual Entertainment, Arts and Entertainment. 327 programmes have been submitted by 129 production companies and broadcasters from 31 countries worldwide.

Belgium is a major contributor, as are the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Norway and Israel. Australia and Canada also feature in the top ten, and there are entries from India, China, South Korea and New Zealand.

The 52nd Rose d'Or occurs on the penultimate day of the Media Summit, a Eurovision event which attracts Europe’s finest programme makers, content producers and commissioners. Tickets to the Rose d'Or also entitle participation in the Media Summit.   (Register)
