Broad coalition calls for safeguards for independent public service media in the EMFA

Today, 19 organizations representing public service media, journalists, media workers, civil society, as well as the cultural and creative industries urged the EU's trilogue negotiators to effectively protect the independence of public service media in the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA).

Thomas Bergmann, EBU's Senior EU Policy Adviser, said, “Public service media play an essential role in providing diverse, high-quality, and impartial content to European citizens. If their independence is undermined, the threat to democracy is clear. We applaud the European Parliament's provisions that include robust safeguards against government interference and ensure long-term funding. This position must be adopted during inter-institutional trilogue negotiations.”

The broad range of co-signatories shows that the EMFA's objective must remain clear: to strengthen and protect public service media. Read our full statement to the right.
