Protection of whistleblowers: essential to media freedom

EBU and partners signed a joint open letter to EU institutions calling for strong whistleblower protection.

Following-up on the European Commission proposal on the protection of whistleblowers, the EBU and partners from the media and journalism have co-signed an open letter to the European Parliament and the Council, in which they call for the Directive to guarantee "a robust protection for persons choosing to turn to the media to report unlawful or wrongful acts".

They want the possibility for whistleblowers to report to the press directly, without the so-called tiered-approach which may hamper their efforts to reveal wrongdoing. This letter complements the position of the EBU and meets the policy requirements the EBU has been calling for.
